Good Morning John
Last night Thursday the 20th December at 20h50 we were sitting on our veranda looking out to sea in an Easterly direction from our home in Ramsgate, KwaZuluNatal, South Africa.
The evening was very quiet with very little wind to talk of. The sky was clear and the stars were bright.
A bright orange coloured ball of light came into sight ( a couple of kilometres out at sea) travelling from South to North. It was flying along a steady speed faster than a ship or helicopter and at a height of maybe 500 feet above the surface of the water. There was no sound whatsoever. It was the size of a cricket ball and did not pulsate.
Through binoculars the ball simply appeared larger and no distinguishing features could be observed.
It continued to fly up the coast in what appeared to be a straight trajectory until it went out of sight.
We have never seen this kind of phenomenon before and when we phoned my son who lives 3 Kilometres further south he described having seen the same thing a few nights before.
For your information.
Update: December 21st 2012 20:00
Only my wife and I saw it.
Tonight I was on my own at 20h00 again outside looking into the sky when it reappeared for a brief second or two. This time the same orange ball appeared high in the sky and then flew quickly 'downwards' before disappearing. It looked more like a meteorite this time except it had no tail.
I have never seen anything like this before and certainly have not been able to provide a rational association.
